I was ghosted on mainland recently and had a friendly soul help me sort it out.

First off she pointed me to:
http://blogs.secondlife.com/message/424221#424221

Which includes the standard ghosting options (have owner or LL reset sim) but also a do-it-yourself option that actually worked for me to un-ghost my AV (the bottom of the second message in the thread describes the procedure).

She also pointed me to a JIRA ticket to request LL create an Avatar Reset option, though it may be technically impossible, voting on it would help highlight the issue.

Another tidbit I gleaned from this is it is likely scripted objects crossing sim lines are the cause of the ghosting.  Of course vehicles are one but also consider clothing with resizing scripts and other worn items with scrips in them, the less of those you are wearing when traversing sims the better chance of a successful crossing.

For her help she requested I pass it on to others in need, so there ya go, hope it doesnt happen to you, but now at least we have something to try instead of waiting for for a sim reset.

Just in case the original message disappears, I'm gonna copy over the DIY method:

An alternative D.I.Y. method is:

Firstly, you need to bring up your log in screen BUT DO NOT LOG IN YET. Instead, go into "edit" at the top of the screen, "preferences", click on the "general" tab and tick the box next to "show start location on log in screen", click "apply".

Now fill in your normal log in details, but where you have an extra box (starting location), type in the word Pooley.

Try to log in - but if you get the same message up on your screen, just ignore it, ignore the time it says, and just try again, and again, and again.  With patience and persistence you WILL manage to log in between 1 and 30 minutes, during one of the elusive offline minutes that occurs while an avatar is in this ghosted state.

Once you have successfully logged in, teleport across to where your ghosted duplicate is.  When the real avatar is within range of the ghost (go to where the ghost dot is, not just the same sim), it causes a paradox, the two entities merge, thus freeing the stuck presence.

NB: You can use this method to log in, even if you don't find your ghosted duplicate, but it will mean that when you log out, this problem will recur until the ghost is cleared.

I may not ghost as bad as some people, but I do get that annoying timer after some crashes.  Angry

I made sure to have the location select menu on my login screen to deal with the issue.  Wink

Once that timer shows up, I flip between home and last location on the menu until I login again, if that still fails, I manually type in a region name no where near my home or crash point; This trick helps a lot and seems to avoid the nasty ghosting people tend to get.  Wink
