Okay everyone, this is important:

A few of us today have been discussing antivirus software etc... It appears that some tinies are not aware of the dangers of viruses or of the huge security holes in running some 'standard' software that came with their computers.

So I am starting a thread which hopefully will be a quick little guide on software that is free that you SHOULD be running.

1) Do not run IE. It is a huge security hole and a disaster. Win7 maybe good but IE is not. If a hacker wants to infect a computer, he'll first do it using holes in IE. That's a fact.

2) Do not run Norton Antivirus. You may have payed for it but it is utterly useless for most things. It slows your computer down horribly and it is like a Yale key lock. While Yale key locks may make you feel safe, they also happen to be a standard in the industry which almost every lock pick set is designed to thwart. So too with Norton. If you are running Norton, you are running the other program that most hackers will run their malicious code against to test it.

My personal recommendations are:

1) Get Firefox or Google Chrome. They're free and they run much faster and better than IE. They're also more powerful and give you more options. Installing them is a snap.

http://www.firefox.com - download the installer and install it and then make it your default browser when it asks. It will import your IE favorites so you won't lose anything.

http://chrome.google.com - I love Google Chrome, personally. It is the fastest browser there is and very safe. Some people have a problem with Google's privacy EULA which is why I recommend Firefox first. I don't really have a problem with Google though so I use Chrome (although I tend to run both Firefox and Chrome). Download and install. It's very simple.

2) Get Avast Antivirus. It's free, you just have to register for a key with your email. http://www.avast.com and click on the free download link. It is very good and does not use up tons of CPU. It is, in fact, much, much, better than Norton.

There are other great antiviral softwares out there for free or small fees, and I hope others will add to it in the thread. AVG is also a great one.

3) Get spybot and run it. Now. If you've been using IE and Norton, you will most likely need this. A free and amazing app, you cannot run this soon enough if you haven't yet. http://www.spybot.com. Download and install.

You may be thinking that you're fine for now, but you probably aren't. If you are, you're incredibly lucky. However, if you're also thinking that it'll be a pain to switch, or that you'll mess something up, I can assure you that you won't. In fact, I'll help you! I'll stay with you in SL while you switch over. It'll only take a few minutes. I hope others who post here will also help people who need it.

I promise you that even if you don't know anything about computers, if you can download and install SL, you can download and install these and make them your default programs. It's very easy.

Don't be afraid to approach me or somebody else who may post here with info.

I forgot one other great and free program.

A lot of people will have their computer running much slower after a few months of use. There are many reasons for this but one way to clean out your machine is with an awesome program called Ccleaner.

http://www.ccleaner.com

It will fix up your bad registries and bad file associations and clean out lots of stuff. I usually run it after running spybot. It's a great program to have and I highly recommend it to everyone. Just download and install. It's pretty user friendly but, again, if you have questions: ask! Some of us are delighted to help and trust me, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to run these programs and secure and clean your computer.

Thank you, Summer! I've been meaning to reinstall avast and spybot but kept forgetting. I didn't know about ccleaner - going to use it right away! Smiley

While we're talking about security, let's not forget to mention that everyone should have a firewall as well. If you have IE 7, there's a pretty decent one built in. Otherwise, Comodo, Online Armor, and ZoneAlarm are free ones to try.

Re: antivirus: one antivirus program is good, but don't run more than one at the same time or they will interfere with each other and slow down your computer. Other good free ones include Avira, ClamWin, and Panda.

Antispyware: Spybot Search & Destroy is a personal favorite; I also like Ad-Aware and Malware Bytes.

ok so I have both firefox and Internet explorer, but I gotta tell you for some reason firefox is very unstable and crashes and will not reload/open unless I reboot my computer. which means I have to have internet explorer or restart my pc. god I miss netscape navigator.

secondly, I have comcast and they are now offering free Norton suite (instead of mcaffe aka crapafee), which I've heard the latest one has been improved and is not like the crappy version in years past. I had problems with nortons before, it kept deleting my winsocks and which would mean I could not get on the internet. so I'm leary to download a free version of that.

Ok here is what I am running, which prob. may not be good idea to ppl cause then they could hack me but oh well.

I have CA antivirus, NVidia firewall, and spybot search and destroy.

someone told me to get pc tools spyware doctor with antivirus. never heard of it dont know if it's crap of not. other ppl have said get avg, avast, zone alarm or kaperskys antivirus. tried the first 3 and imho they sucked.

someone else told me to get this program. http://www.comodo.com/

it's so confusin and no matter what u get, u constantly have to download upgrades and there is always some new virus that can sneak by ANY program.  *shrugs*

Which version of firefox are you using, Karms (Help > About Mozilla Firefox)? 3.0 and 3.5 are both prevalent right now; you might try switching to whichever of those you don't have and seeing if that's more stable for you. Or try Google Chrome like Summer suggested. I have a personal hatred for IE for many reasons, but one of them is certainly the security holes.

As for updating virus databases, most programs do that automatically if you set them to, so you never have to think about it. I just got avast and it's pretty user friendly with good settings options. I'd avoid Norton, free or not; it's too intrusive, it slows things down like crazy, and like Summer said, if someone's going to engineer a virus to get past anything, it will be to get past a big name like Norton.

If everything looks up at your computer, maybe it's not the programs thats at fault. Could be hardware issue?

karma - I find that running SL and Firefox at the same time can be problematic, esp. if I have a lot of tabs open.

Also, Spyware Doctor is a good program.

On another thought - what is the state of your hard drive? If it is very full or needs to be de-fragmented, that could cause problems, or at least make problems worse.

I have recently been moving to Microsoft Security Essentials.  I'm finding that it is much faster than AVG, free, handles both antivirus and spyware, and seems to use less memory.
It's also more adept at removing deeply entrenched bugs.

SO my AVG free trial comes to an end soon...

Do I; A) simply move the the free version of AVG; or B) get a free trial of something else...and if so, which one?
