I have  a  new  idea  it  involves  a   tiny ring tone  for RL cell phones.  I don’t know  how  to do it  but  if  someone  could  come  up with a  way  to  sell  the  (nam nam  nam nam nam) song  gesture  as  a  ring tone. I  think  many of  us  tinys   would  download  it  for  our  cell phones.
Part of  the  money  generated  for  this  could  go  to  the up keep of Raglan. I have  talked  to  other  people  about  this  idea  and  I  think  it is  a  good  one. The only problem is  how  to  do it. I am going  to  IM  Bo  and  see if  she  thinks it’s  something  that  can  be  done.
Just  imagine  being  out in a  RL  store  and  hearing  the  tiny  ring tone  on  someone’s  cell phone.

It's a super idea, and if it turns out it isn't possible to sell them, I think we at least should have a ringtone section here at the site. Would be awesome Smiley

Oh so sign me up for that -- there are so many really cool things that could be blended together to make a fun ring tone if someone knows how to do it!

You could also go nuts making most of the tiny gestures ring tones Wink

Well, Mutley already has the 'MUTLEY!' and 'OTTER!' sounds as her text alerts on her phone. I know because I've heard them; that was surreal, being sat in an RL Starbucks and hearing SL sounds. At first I thought I was hearing things...

Huh?

I don't know about the sales side (there are ways to do this through scripting and time-sensative emails and such, hmmm... Maybe payment via paypal and delivery via email?)  but the ringtones themselves are pretty straight forward.  Many (most?) modern cell phones can use MP3's or WAV's as ringtones.  I know that some vendors lock out mp3's and wav's though (Cricket, for example), and some phones require proprietary formats, but the tools to create those from mp3's are usually fairly easy to find.
As for sending them directly to the phones, I'm not sure about that, either.  I can see emailing the file, or emailing a link to a file, but then it would be up to the user to get it onto their phone.  Some phones can receive the files via email (easiest) or MMS (not sure how that one works yet), while others would require the buyer/user to actually hook their phone up to a computer and copy it over.

I don't know any of the technology for doing this either. I know my phone can use any wav, mp3, aac, midi or wmv, but that's probably not general for all phones. Most phones today should be able to use mp3 though?

Most should, yes.  Some older or lower-end (that is, basic "just a phone" type phones) may still be stuck on the custom formats.  And, as I said, I know some vendors/service providers, such as Cricket in the US, don't allow outside ringtones without alot of work to get it into the phone.
I think this is definitely an idea worth pursuing though.

First of all, I'd like to say it would be very cool to have a Raglanized ringtone! Cheesy

But...
Besides the technical complications that are already mentioned, I see some legal implications if we were to sell the ringtones.  Selling things inworld to be used inworld is one thing, but if things are to be used in real life, we will need a registered company that will have to pay VAT and so on. Besides that, every country has its own tax system with different percentages, and I don't think that will work (please prove me wrong!).

Regarding the technicalities: it's easy to post mp3s and WAV2 on this site, and we do have the webspace. I think it would be quite easy to have an inworld sound vendor that gives a download URL instead of the inworld sound/gesture (just an idea Smiley) They can be either free or paid (for the latter see my legal concerns).
As for the other types of ringtones: I have no idea how they work, the standard sound files should be converted or something and well, see Copper's post above this one...

Uhh... was this by any means a clear story?  Wink

Clear as mud!  How about a donation type thing?  I know this doesn't always work out so well, though.  Elsewise, a small/reasonable price should be good.  Just have to keep an eye on things to make sure someone doesn't go passing around the URL :-/
As for formats, I think if we posted MP3's and WAV's, that would cover probably 90% to 95% of the folks.  The remainder, I could do on-demand (with some lag, of course, to find the required tools).

Thanks everyone  for all the  good info. I have  found  a  way  for us  to make  this  work. The  site  http://www.myxer.com/  allows you to  upload  your  own  ring  tone at  no  charge  and  the  best  part is  to  download  the  ring tone its  free  also . The  ring  tone is  downloaded  in  TEXT  or PIX  to your  phone  the only cost is  for  the  text message from your  service  provider. If  you have  unlimited  text its  totally  free.
Ring tone  files can be  uploaded  using  MP3 and other  formats. Free  tools  for  uploading  your   ring tone  are located   at http://www.myxer.com/share/    or  you can  simply hit  the  share  button at  the top of  the  page. The  free  upload tools  are  at  the  bottom of the  page on  the  left  hand  side.
A few of  the  thing  you can  do  are  set  a  price  for your  ring  tone or  offer it  for  free and  in  the  tools  you can also  link it  to  your  web  site.
If  anyone is  interested  in doing  this  please  contact Zayn  and  Bo  to find out  if they want  to do this.
Hopefully by  putting out  this idea  I have  done  my part if  trying  to  help out in adding  to  the  fun and enjoyment of  our beloved  Raglan.

Does Myxer cover Europe, or is it just the US?  Given our sizable base of Euro tinies, I think it would only be fair if we could include them.

Like Zayn always says: If you want something done, make it happen!
If this site really works that easily, looks like someone only has to collect (or create!) the sounds, then upload them, then post the link here and/or inworld!

So it's really not a question whether Zayn or I want to do this, it's a question of just going and doing it Wink
