The Humane Society is a great group. What about one of the organizations that handles (trains, places, etc) assistance animals? Like Paws With A Cause, or 4 Paws for Ability? There are lots of them out there, both for-profit and non-profit. There's also an association (if I'm reading this right) of these groups, Assistance Dogs International. A few links are below.
Service animals are intelligent, amazing critters. They help people with all sorts of needs, not just the blind. Did you know there are now animals being trained as hearing animals for the deaf? They are trained to alert their humans to things like smoke alarms, doorbells, telephones, and more. There are basic companion animals, whose purpose is more or less to act as a constant companion. I know a few people who have very severe panic disorders, and have service dogs which act as a focus point of sorts. When the world starts to collapse, they can focus just on their dog, helping them stay calm. There are seizure dogs, which are very special, in that they have the utterly amazing ability to sense a seizure in their human BEFORE it happens, and they can alert their human, who can then take whatever measures are required (pull the car over; put on whatever safety gear may be used; call someone to let them know they're about to have a seizure, etc).
I have no particular relation or attachment to service animals, except that I think they're all amazing, and serve an important role in the lives of many, many people.
